One of the most difficult thing with all the excitement of a new little one is deciding what you want versus what you need. I compiled this list for my sister, who unfortunately miscarried early in the first trimester, and I would love to get your opinion on it. Great list Jenn!
ReplyDeleteI agree completely with your wants list! We got a fancy baby monitor but used it maybe once since we live in a house that's approximately 900 square feet and can hear well all over the house! If you have twins like we did, you might want to stick the stroller on the 'needs' list since it _is_ quite difficult to take two out alone without one. We do have several friends who never bought a stroller with a single child and did just fine.
A couple of comments on the "needs" list:
Our kids outgrew the newborn outfits in a week, we never used Rubbing Alcohol, already had a small nail clipper and emery boards that we used, and the hospital gave us vasline that we only used for our son (I'll let you figure out why! ;) ).
I know some people put other things on their needs list too and different babies do need different things, so I think your list is pretty accurate!
Thanks for sharing!
Lea
Hi Jennifer--GREAT LIST, awesome starting point. I agree with Lea about the stroller. For wants I would also add the snuzzler, it is a MUST for me, but probably a want for most. I borrowed a car seat for #2's arrival, took in a ton of used newborn clothes for little man as I have a girl already, and I bought an entire used nursery furniture set, crib, mattress, changing tables, changing pads, armoire, and dresser, all for $460! I will post pics once we move in, the set was in perfect condition, and I got in on Craigslist. Saved us SOOOOOOO much money! The lady even gave me the changing pad covers and crib mattress cover! With your first you want everything brand new and the best, by the time #2 rolls around and you realize all that crap costs a TON of unnecessary money, you get smarter!
ReplyDeleteAlso want to mention good point on the changing pad and table in wants--totally not a necessity, I never had one, this new one (or used one I should say) will be my first. I set up a little changing station on our couch in the living room and in our bedroom.
Thanks for your comments on my post yesterday, yes, I am NUTS!!! It's crazy time!!!!!!!!
Good list. I would add alot more to the clothes part. My older two boys are exactly a year apart. The older one was only a year at the time I had my second son. Let me just say that you will be very busy with two little ones. I would say to have at least a week or twos worth of clothes. And onesies you can't get enough of those, expecially for winter babies. None of my kids really cared for the swing, bouncer, or entertainment center things. As for a baby tub. I always gave mine a bath with me. It's easier and more bonding time. I breastfed so a boppy pillow was a must with me but other than that it's now a cushion on my wooden rocking chair:) With my daughter I never used vaseline(i'm sure you plan is for diaper rashes) I used powder. If I used anything else she screamed. Burp clothes I always took a couple of those cloth diapers from the hospital and used those. Socks I would recommend lots of socks. Those things get lost really easy. Good luck! My little girl just turned a year old and she's my only girl. They get big quick.
